Can some personal obstacles just go away on their own?

Waist of Thyme

I used to be scared of dogs. I used to have social anxiety. Neither of those apply to me anymore. Both of them just seem to have vanished, and it's not because I took action. I didn't really do anything. I didn't care to do anything. I was completely indifferent.

This doesn't seem to be the norm. Most people who overcome mental or psychological weaknesses have to put in work to do so. There's also the saying "People don't change unless they want to change". I never gradually exposed myself to situations until they didn't effect me anymore, which is a common technique. I never went to therapy or took medication. I didn't make any kind of lifestyle changes. It's like I just had a finite amount of those feelings, and I used them all up.

Has anyone else overcome something by it just subsiding on its own, without actually doing anything yourself?

To clarify, when I say scared of dogs, I mean that I once ran into busy traffic to get away from a small dog on a leash because being hit by a car genuinely seemed 1000% less terrifying than being around a dog.

I had a childhood phobia of mustaches. That sort of just went away, probably because I was never harmed by a mustache and my brain went "that's dumb".

They're still creepy though...

Unfortunately, this hasn't really been my experience. I sure wish my anxiety and depression would just go away, but as I get older, they just seem to be intensifying. I suppose over the years different things have been more / less of a struggle, but I think deep down, they're stable and / or getting worse.
