Discovery of an asexual anime character

Poison Ice Blade

I was looking around on google searching for tv characters that are officially asexual and realized that luffy from "one piece" is totally asexual.

When I had watched it the first time I had honestly thought the reason that he wasn't attracted to anyone was because he still had the mindset of an child.

But then they had made his ability to not be attracted into a main plot point in one part of the story.

He was able to approach a lady who was known for turning men (and maybe woman) who fell into love with her at first sight into stone.

But luffy didn't turn to stone because he didn't think of her in that way and ironically when she was defeated she feel in love with luffy but luffy being the child he is doesn't return it.

But to be honest i don't think she cares.

Any fellows anime fans here? I like to hear your thoughts about it.

Maybe it really is a phase for luffy and fall in love when he has matured.

Perhaps his orientation could change; just like anyone elses, but that shouldn't be assumed.

Nor his childishness causing it. I myself look young/moe' and people could blame that on my mental development and say my asexuality is due to it. But I'm past the age of late development and it hasn't changed.

If the creator of the show hasn't made anything official, then I'll just make it official for myself until proven wrong.

Luffy is definitely asexual in how he is portrayed, though I think that is not intentional. I believe he meant to portray someone who is completely pure and focused on nothing but adventure. If he started to have attractions to any of the mugiwara pirates I think it would completely ruin their relationship as friends. I would love it if he was an official ace but I really doubt the creator of One Piece ever had that in mind.

Plus it is a DBZ inspired Shounen which traditionally avoid sex and minimize romance. Goku, for instance, is presented is just like Luffy. Pure and without any hint of sexuality. However, since he has kids we assume that he is not asexual after all (though..I think that is a bad assumption as we can have children).

As for Boa Hancock power not affecting Luffy, the way powers are shown in that show tend to be very inconsistent. She turned pacifista into stone, and they are androids. They shouldn't have been affected. Yes, it probably was because of Luffy's pure heart that he was not affected; but, for all we know, Luffy's rubber powers might make him immune to her power in the same way it did to Enel's lighting power.

I mean, how do you turn a rubber man to stone?

Well you turn rubber to stone the same way you turn flesh to stone

And the pacifistas were still Kuma underneath all the metal and cloning

I think I read somewhere that he was officially asexual.

Two of my friends are really into One Piece and I want to say I remember them telling me they read somewhere that Luffy was officially asexual too. Due to how bad my memory is and that I didn't see the thing myself I can't confirm this though

The author of the series has as much as said Luffy is ace. "He's only attracted to adventure." was his response to a fan inquiring about potential relationships with any of his crew members. It's good enough for me.

(For all we know, Chichi could be the one that initiates sex in the relationship while Goku just goes along with it because it feels good.)

Also, after somewhat belatedly realizing that this is in my forum, I'm moving this thread to World Watch.

I like thinking of Luffy as ace but as Star Bit pointed out a lot of shounen protagonists are presented in similar ways. He's clearly one though because of all the scenes with Hancock, and even Goku wasn't that idiotic. My sister pointed out that he peeks on Nami and Vivi in the bath along with the other guys and apparently nosebleeds with them but I think that was mostly as a gag rather than as a serious character plot point. The stuff with Hancock is more important.

That whole 'only attracted to adventure' nonsense is such a cop out. Either he's Asexual or he's not. It's like the Harry Potter thing, where people say there's an Asexual character, but all Rowling says is 'oh, they're just more interested in Dragons'.

It's simply not the same thing as being Asexual, it really isn't.

You assume they have the benefit of knowing what asexuality is. If someone has never heard the term, which would not be surprising at all considering the Oda's age and the culture he comes from, then they are not going to be able to use it.

For example, at the time Elizabeth Moon wrote The Deed of Paksenarrion, she had no word for asexual but there is no denying that Paks is asexual. It's been stated as such by the author and within the context of the book.

... Why not? If they meet the criteria for asexuality (no desire for sex), how are they not asexual? That doesn't make sense.

  • 1 month later...

The author of Beelzebub made comments about Oga's potential asexuality!! Don't know whether it's official fact but it'd be so great!
