The Ageing Asexual Population and Health Care

My concerns are mostly about when I am no longer able to take care of myself. Who will look out for my best interests? How will a nursing home treat a person who has no one to stand up for them?

Be creative. Stash funds. Do some research.

My mother spent her last years in a wonderful Quaker-affiliated retirement community that was run by residents. She had us three kids looking in. But I think she would have been fine if she had depended on support from the community.

Such places are few and far between . . . I think we need to locate them and encourage their expansion and growth.

My father (who was a die-hard pot head, wasn't asexual, but as a doctor, was able to accumulate some money) simply hired someone he liked to look after him. The woman he hired was a few years older than me, had big boobs and came from a family of comedians. in his case, she was a much better choice than a home care nurse, except that she tended to steal his drugs and sell them on the black market.

Stashing funds just means there is more for people to steal when you can't speak for yourself. And research isn't the problem -- my grandmother and my friend were in well-respected, not-cheap facilities. It's a problem if there is not somebody who has your back. I have a couple of young, more distant relatives who might be able to look out for me, and who might be interested in doing it for some inheritance. But it's definitely a concern.
