Dr. Lori Brotto at the University of British Columbia and Dr. Tony Bogaert at Brock University in Ontario, Canada are collaborating on a study investigating sexual arousal in asexual men. This study entails coming into one of our labs either in Vancouver, BC or in St. Catharines, Ontario, and watching a series of erotic films in a private, locked room, while sexual arousal is measured. Participants will be paid $50, and there is an opportunity to participate in a second phase of the study for an additional $25. There is a possibility of funding for participants to travel from Toronto, Ontario to the Brock University site.
The goal of this research is to further our understanding of asexuality in order to decrease stigma associated with a lifelong lack of sexual attraction.
Ethics boards at both the University of British Columbia and Brock University have approved this study. All inquiries and participant information will be kept completely confidential.
For further information, please contact Malvina Skorka (ms10yp@brocku.ca) at the Brock University site, and Morag Yule (Morag.Yule@vch.ca) at the Vancouver, BC site.
Our ethics boards require that you contact us directly, so we will not be monitoring responses to this post. Please email one of us at the addresses provided above. We welcome any questions you might have!

Thanks for your interest and for supporting our research!

Update: The researcher has made a recruitment video, in which they talked a little more about the procedure and other information about the study:

This study has been approved for posting by the AVEN Project Team.

It's a pity that they haven't found a way to 'measure sexual arousal' from a webcam broadcast, in order to do the research worldwide.

While I'd love to get paid 50/75 bucks to sit in a chair and be unimpressed (I had to do enough of that in college, except we had to pay THEM for it), the travel fees wouldn't make up for it D:

Same here, Philip. :/

I hope they can find enough participants!

As someone who is from BC, this sounds interesting, but it's a little to far for me to travel. Too bad UNBC doesn't do programs like this. Also I realized afterwards this was asking for male participants.

Can I bring my gameboy, or do I have to actually pay attention? :b

How does this have anything to do with asexuality though?

Many asexual men that I know (and women though maybe not as many? I personally do not get aroused just from watching porn but do find certain porn heightens arousal if I'm aroused already) would still become aroused by pornography as a natural reaction by the body to the image and sounds of people having sex. Doesn't mean they want to have sex *with the people in the porn* or with anyone, even if they're aroused. However mentally and emotionally, I believe the asexual male would have a different reaction to porn than a sexual male (in most cases anyway) yet this says they are measuring sexual arousal, not emotional or mental response. (EDIT or maybe by sexual arousal they mean whether or not the man says he wants to have sex with someone after watching the porn, but if it was just about what the man thinks and feels, then why do they need to travel to a lab which would be hard for many people)

Maybe there is a lot more to the study than stated here? or maybe they want to prove that many asexual men have penises and bodies that work just like sexual men's bodies, most of them just don't have too much interest in putting their working body parts into someone elses bodily orifices? (in which case, great study!)

The post only contains a VERY brief description of the study (if you contact the researchers, they'll give you the full information). If you search for Dr. Brotto's previous papers on asexuality, you'll see they won't conflate sexual arousal and sexual desire. :)

"while sexual arousal is measured"

How is it measured?

I think that's measured by brain responses... or something like that.... level of adrenaline... etc..

What is the method for measuring 'brain response' or adrenaline. EEG? Blood sample (for adrenaline, hormones)?

Or are there other/additional methods?

Maybe also heart rate and breathing are meaured? Cortisol in the saliva (a stress indicator). Facial/eye response? Perspiration?

Is 'arousal' what's actually being measured or is it measurable physiological changes correlated with the onset of the cues/stimuli?

Most studies on male arousal that I've seen include a penis cuff to measure blood flow. Probably also EEG.

Interesting subject. Will the results be posted on Aven (assuming they get published)?

*TMI warning!!*

I can't help the research, but I like to know the outcome.

I just did a small test for myself: I watched some specific porn clips which I know that those help arousing myself.

I watched it for 9 minutes... not much happened which surprised me a bit. I didn't got aroused at all, neighter did I get an erection. I would have expected the opposite because those clips normally work great when I am already aroused.

So yeah. I'm interested in the outcome of this research.

What about FtM trans people? Do they need to have gone through surgery?

I don't know, there's a lot of stiff competition in academia...

I live somewhat close to St. Catharines, and I'm pretty curious as to how they will conduct the research so I will shoot them an email, that is, if they are still conducting the study.

Well this sounds like important research to me, I think you're all just acting cocky.

Funny thing is, they would have to measure my level of arousal in different manners. Whereas yes, very infrequently, an excess of blood does flow to my penis aka 'getting a boner', I also have sometimes the arousal trigger wheres I stay flaccid and there is like a shock to my skin, almost like goose bumps but warmer.
