Not that easy, but worth efforts. :3

^ I didn't expect to read this on an asexual forum - I thought the main reason to go to Hungary was to get on to its beautiful girls :D (though the overall life quality there is very high too).

Languages have always come easy to me. I'm pretty fluent in Croatian (native), English and German, but never went further than that, just not as interesting as some other stuff.

But i am learning ASL. Signing is just soooo interesting to me. And this one is really just for fun because i pretty much live on the other side of the globe from where ASL is "spoken" (in USA). My country has its own sign language, but there is nowhere i can learn it online and with my uni, it's pretty hard to find the time for classes (and the money for books)

Also a few tips for you learning Serbo-Croatian:

1. never call it that when speaking to a Serbian or a Croat, they hate it even tho it is pretty much the same language (i personally don't mind)

2. beware of things called "padeži" they are pretty screwed up. In German they are called "Fall" (google translate says that in English they are called "cases") but in Croatia (and Serbia. BiH, Montenegro) we have 7, not 4 so good luck ^^

3. Don't worry about the placement of words in a sentence when speaking, no matter what you put where, everyone will be able to understand you perfectly.

eg: "Pojesti cijelu tortu mogu" "Mogu cijelu tortu pojesti" "Cijelu tortu mogu pojesti" "Tortu cijelu pojesti mogu" "Mogu pojesti cijelu tortu" Those are all grammatically correct and mean exactly the same thing: "I can eat the whole cake"

:D I feel it's kind of my duty since I'm partially Hungarian (that explains why I'm beautiful aha) XD

Btw Polish also has 7 cases, Finnish about 18, and Hungarian almost 30 if I remember well *challenge mode: on*

I'm trying to teach myself German, but it's slow going. I hope my German will be good enough to study aboard in Germany for a semester or two.

I'm learning Dothraki, I'm not even sure why, I've only seen 3 episodes of game of thrones, but I like the language. I've mostly been using memrise.org, which is a brilliant free site for learning vocab, and because you can set up your own list of vocab, pretty much every language is on there, it's really useful. I know I need to learn the grammar as well at some point though

I took an ASL class in college and I really liked it. I caught onto it much faster than any other language I've tried to learn.

I also used to want to learn Korean. I bought cds and everything and I would practice for hours everyday, but that was 4 years ago and I forgot everything I learned.

I'm currently learning Russian. I'm far from fluent but I got all the basics and such down. I hope to learn Spanish and Japanese in the future as well.

Well, English is a foreign language for me, to begin with. I'm also of mixed European ethnicity (Ukrainian, Czech, Swedish, Romanian, probably Polish and who-knows-what-else). And I live in a foreign country in a bilingual region, being a native speaker of a third language. And I studied Linguistics in university. And I have foreigner godparents and many foreigner friends, and many favourite books/music lyrics/movies in foreign languages I longed to understand correctly. So, does any of my language learning qualify as "just for fun", provided that in each case there was an obvious vested interest present?

Maybe, one does. I started learning Catalan last year, but had to take a break recently, due to some tragic family circumstances. I will definitely continue, once I get my second wind. It's entrancing.

English is pretty much my only language but I want to learn sooo many. The only problem is that it's hard for me to learn outside a classroom environment or without an actual teacher. I took French for 3 years and I'm taking Chinese 1 next year. I have Duolingo for French and Italian and it's going okay; I'd still rather have a teacher though. I also had Duolingo for German but I kind of lost interest. I still want to learn though. I really want to learn Japanese but I'm having extreme difficulty finding classes or a really good (free) online program.

I wanna travel so many different places so I want at least the basics in a lot of different languages. Any suggestions on good websites for languages (especially European ones)?

I'm learning French and Japanese right now, though I've sort of halted practicing Japanese. I'm hoping to learn Polish after that. Anyone know some good websites for learning Japanese?

I want to learn Italian but I haven't yet had the time. I'm fluent in Spanish, though, so Italian shouldn't be too difficult to pick up on my own.

I never expected to decide to learn Swedish, but I'm really enjoying it so far. It's only been a couple weeks, but I think I'll stick with it.

Teaching myself Finnish. I've been on a hiatus for a bit now though because once I got to the point of forming sentences and the cases, I ran away . I've just been trying to learn the base words for now.

I listen to many bands who are from Finland and it's been fun being able to understand some words (not to mention fun to sing along to).

I'd love to also learn German and Swedish/Norwegian eventually. Wish Rosetta Stone was availible for Finnish.

I know it's been a while since your post, but I'd be willing to help you with German (although it is my second language, so I wouldn't be able to help you with the finer points that a native speaker would). If you do study abroad, definitely see if you can go with the full immersion option. I was there for 6 weeks after studying German for a year, and I was fluent by the time I got home.

While I was working at a banquet resturant, I worked alongside Ukranians/Russians. Somehow, I kinda learned on my own a few words here and there. It would be great to learn more!

I already know English and Spanish! Hopefully, I can learn Russian as well. Or any other Slavic language.

I did three years of Spanish and high school and was probably the best in my classes. (I'm a teacher's pet :P)

But now that I'm out, I haven't been practicing as much as I should be. I'm not good enough to actually have conversations, but I'd really love to speak it fluently one day. I'm just too lazy.

Other than that, I'm interested in learning how to read different kinds of writing. I don't know many Japanese words, but I'm good at reading hiragana and katakana and I like to show off as much as I can. I'm not even going to try Kanji, though. And recently I've been thinking about learning how to read and pronounce Korean words. That writing system has a pretty cool set up. But mostly my passion is Spanish.

I am in a good place with Spanish right now. (Many years of classes and working in an area with many native speakers has worked wonders). I still have trouble me reading novels though. I just don't have a large enough vocabulary (and it is much slower than reading in English for me...).

I've started working on Japanese over the past six months, but I haven't made much progress at all. I hope that if I keep working at it, I will start feeling like I've made progress.

If anyone wants to practice either, send me a PM. I'd love to have a study buddy.

My goodness yes! :O I love learning new languages. My native language is German, but I prefer English. At school I learned Spanish and Latin and at the moment I´m trying to decide on which language to learn next. Right now it´s between Thai, Russian and French. :)

So excited that other people are this obsessed too ^_^

I'd learn Spanish, Russian and French if I could.

As a music student, I had to learn Italian, French and German musical terms (mostly Italian, and I forgot most of the French and German), and I learn Mandarin Chinese in school (due to my country's education policy about mother tongue languages).

The reason I picked these 3 is because they're 3 of the UN's 6 languages, and I already speak 2.

Once, I learned Finnish for fun, but I sort of lost interest in it. :(

I'm learning Swedish! And German and Ukrainian and Greek and Russian and Latin and python (which is technically still a language).

At least, I would be if I had the time.

As of now, I am really learning Swedish and German on Duolingo, and python on coursera. I'd do Russian too if Duolingo would just hurry up. (I mean, I know it take a long time, but I'm quite dependent on Duolingo for learning languages atm and I really want to learn Russian)

I don't know why I'm learning these languages. I mean, I know English and Mandarin already, so it's definitely not for the 'communicate in a foreign country' reason. I do know that I love etymology and trying to find the pure meaning of words (hence my choice of greek and latin) so learning how many different languages say the same thing gives very good insight into the actual meaning of the word/concept instead of the one-dimensional English meaning.

I also chose Russian and German because I'm just interested in the country and their history in general and would like to know more about everything about them (no, this does not prove that I'm interested in fascism and communism, even if I'm not all favourable towards democracy). And I chose Swedish because I was waiting for the Russian course on Duolingo, and I didn't want to study the more commonly studied languages like French and Spanish.

Been failing at teaching myself japnese for the longest time. Ironically enough playing dengeki bunko kinda got me back on track even though learning through anime/video games is not always the best way :P I call it "anime/video game talk" which is mostly more casual if not "never gonna give up" kick your butt" that kinda thing xD

I've given up on reading literary works in Spanish and Italian (simplified as they were). I came to the conclusion that this is not the type of vocabulary I need at my level. When/If I'm at a similar level in those languages as I am with English this will be more appropriate.

Also, I've recently enrolled in an intermediate course of Italian in a local language school. Apparently it's unusual for an Italian group at this level to even form. There are only four of us, which is unusual in itself. So far I've mostly studied this language on my own. I've taken some courses but the last one was almost 10 years ago.
