Tanwen
This popped up on my feed today http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3009708/Plans-proposed-ambitious-12-400-mile-road-Russia-link-Britain-U-S.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490 It would be the longest continuous road in the world (currently held by Australia) and President Putin would undoubtedly bask in the glory BUT would the US ever consider such a project? Sage Raven Domino
I hope that at least the Bering Strait tunnel is managed primarily by the US. There's a saying that the two main eternal problems of Russia are fools and roads.
Mostly Peaceful Ryan
I don't really see a point to this road Alaska isn't that populated and no one is going drive from Alaska to England it would be so much easier to get a plane
Nevyn
I think Russia's goal is to have an easy way to move oil from Russia to Europe and the US. Something I don't see US oil interests allowing to happen.

There are ships for that, that land in Russia and Alaska has very few people, creating an entire road system there just wouldn't make much sense to build nor maintain. You probably would only even be able to use that road in summer months anyway. The entire proposal seems silly to me.
Sage Raven Domino
It's silly for the US to support the project because, with few upsides for the US, it would help the development of the Russian Far East, which is indeed in terrible shape. Plus the Russian oligarchy is eager to propose any grand project, even the stupidest, because it's an extra opportunity to pocket (to 'saw', as the opposition says) the money of taxpayers and partner countries. chair jockey
Such a road would be purely symbollic, and I don't think either the US or Russia has much money lying around available to spend on symbols.

I would totally drive from here to the UK, just to say I did it. I like adventures like that :)
Zerο
Based on their work for the Socchi Olympics, I'm incredibly skeptical of Russian efficiency and integrity.
Robin L
Whaaaaa? OK, this is just insane. Imagine all the resources required, and who would ever use this road?
deltaX
I think the idea of a road between Russia and the US is an interesting one, but I don't think it would be practical to actually build it. Like others have said, it would take way to much money/resources, and most people would prefer to fly between continents anyway.
Sally
Wouldn't that mess up commercial fishing in the Bering Sea for people like my son?
ThaHoward
It would have created many jobs at least.. in soecific sectors of course. I think it is more about Russia's long term goal of controlling the (future) trade route there.
Asterion Orestes
Some similar visionary project has been publicized before; I once saw a TV program proposing a road/rail bridge across the Strait. The state of east Siberian infrastructure seems to be the biggest practical obstacle, & no doubt there are political considerations as well. This article also mentioned the Chunnel as if it were a highway, when it's strictly a railway link.
Sage Raven Domino
Actually, the Russian government is yet to build a bridge between the Krasnodar Krai (where Sochi and Anapa are) and the Crimea (the Kerch Strait is now served by ferry only, which is insufficient), so don't worry, the Bering project won't start anytime soon. I'd prefer the Crimea to be returned to Ukraine, though (under the conditions of total peace and a proper degree of autonomy).
Næt.
I suspect that Russia has more pressing matters to deal with than building a road to the US.

Sage Raven Domino
I feel that the Russian reigning party just wrote a beautiful fairy tale for the population, which is obviously yet disgusted by the currency crisis.
