Split from Asexual Atheists?

Personally, I support religion, even if I do not adhere to it.

I support freedom of religion, but I do not support religion.

(I also support the freedom to pass on one's superstitions, racial prejudices, phobias, and fantasies to one's children, but I think it would be better if we did not pass on such beliefs.)

I firmly support both religion and freedom of religion. I believe religion does more good than a world without religion or belief in a creator would.

It is interesting how you mention your support of one's freedom to pass on superstitions, racial prejudice, phobias and fantasies to one's children. I actually agree one hundred percent, with both that and your mentioning of how you believe it would be unwise to pass on such beliefs regardless. What I must say, however, is that we should not lump all religious belief into the realm of "fantasy", or associate it with, as you mentioned, superstition, racial prejudice, etc. I find it interesting as I expect there are few things besides religion that would have warrented the comment you made, which suggests to me that you associate these negative things with religion. I associate them with humanity, especially considering they can be applied to literally any belief system, which should be an indication that such charges are not necessarily true.

I prefer not to judge religion by its negative traits and interpretations, much less the people who adhere to religion. I do not judge people at all, and I prefer to judge individual religions by weighing the scales of the good and evil that it is capable of after gaining a respectable understanding of that religion. But fear not, I am not assuming that you judge all religious peoples.

To be honest, I don't think atheists need to worry all that much. I believe that religion will fade away over time, even if it takes a few more millennia. You certainly won't make it disappear by confronting stark believers with your atheism.

Teach children science and critical thinking. Angry atheist rants at the dinner table will serve only to hurt others.

PS: Sorry if this might be off-topic.

Seems right on topic, to me, and quite sensible. Some religious beleifs are harmless or even downright helpful in addressing societal ills, others are quite destructive. Few things in life are entirely of one nature and completely consistent.

Primum non nocere.

I just wanted to geek out a bit about the Khazars. ;)

Ah, yes, those Khazars. My understanding was that it was the ruling class(es) who went over to Judaism.

In all likelihood, yes - just the royals and anybody who wanted to impress them, and probably with only a loose understanding of Judaism among even the most educated. But that's really just a guess based on what seems plausible to modern historians. For all we know, the vast majority of the Khazars could have been Jewish with a deep understanding of the religion, and with their own unique syncretic beliefs!

I... kind of want to invent a Jewish-Tengriist crossover religion now.
