Hey, it's a pleasure to meet you Hannah!

I think it's a good sign that you're comfortable with how you feel regardless of everything else.

Book binding, languages, linguistics and cryptography...for some reason in my mind that draws up an image of Robert Langdon mixed with whoever Nicholas Cage is from National Treasure. It certainly sounds like a cool skill set.

Welcome to AVEN!

Hi! Haha, well Langdon is certainly a cool character, but I don't think I'll be stealing the declaration of independence any time soon. We'll see. And yeah, It all comes together in a really cool way. I'd love to work really hard on all of it and become some sort of expert on ancient manuscripts. What do I call you, btw?

Hi and welcome to AVEN! People here are super nice and understanding, so they're really great to talk to and they'll make you feel at home right away ^_^

And like Lycanrising said, it's good that you're at ease with your feelings despite your past, and you have awesome interests. So have fun around here getting to know people :D

Thank you so much! Also, I love your otterlock icon (I assume it's otterlock?) Thanks for the warm welcome.

No problem! And, haha well it's actually a drawing I made based on a photoshopped picture if a sea lion hugging a penguin..so it's more like sea lion Sherlock hugging a blond penguin John XD but thanks, and anytime! ^_^

The name is Lycanrising. Or Joshua. Or a mix of the two (I have yet to see this done but hey, I'm open to firsts). The 'asexy samurai' part is just a forum title based on how many posts someone has made (it's also editable to whatever you want it to say, I just choose not to).

Okay, you recognise both those references. An excellent sign :P. If ancient manuscripts are your thing then that's super awesome to know that's your niche. Have you studied ancient languages?

XD Do you ship Johnlock, even platonically? They're my first OTP. I have a 221B tattoo on my wrist, I'm in that deep.

I think I have mixed feelings about Johnlock... I might ship other incarnations of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson but I think I prefer the BBC ones as just friends. But I definitely ship them platonically if that's a thing! So in that case they're my BrOTP XD I thought Mary was nice at first, but I would have liked it so much more if they could just stay together like before. Haha that's cool, just like a true fangirl :D

Yeah, I can understand that. And I hated Mary at first but actually started to like her cause she wasn't under the "Jealous Bitch" archtype that most shows seem to cast women under. And heh, I've got other literary tattoos too. I've got a pile of books right below the 221b and A hitchhikers guide quote on the same arm. All the books I can't live without are gonna be added.

Alright so if you like hidden messages theres this book... If you can figure it out it is a little late to act upon but check out xkcd volume 0 it is a comic book but each page has hidden codes and patterns to figure out. I have fun going through it every now and again to remember the encryption patterns on each page.

Wow, just saw this! I'm gonna google it. Thank you! So are the codes more numerical, visual or linguistic? Ahhhh That's exciting!

i would say a fairly even mixture of all but I would say it has a slightly higher mixture of numerical encryptions but by no means a majority. hope you like it!

Welcome [back]! :cake:

These people are right, you have some awesome hobbies/interests/talents! <3

Bookbindinnng? That sounds really awsome. ;w;! There's a person I watch on DA, [bCcreativity] who does that [i think this is what he does] and duhfsdfgf I've always loved the way books like that look.

There's an Open Mic forum where you could post some of the stuff you've done! 8'D I can't speak for everyone, but I know I'd love to see some! 8'D <3

Ooooh! Nice~~ I like seeing how you used the... :Ua yarn? [replace that with the right term if I got it wrong haha > W<; ] you used to tie the pages together. I never knew books had that kind of detail to them. O wO!

Perhaps one day, if you feel like it, you could do like a tutorial/step-by-step for how you book bind! That would be cool to see and learn about! 8'D

You're very welcome! <3 C': That's good to hear. > w<!!

I have an apprenticeship in a Bindery where I live right now, but those are hard to come by, so generally one would go to a school like NBSS or AAB or join the Guild of bookworkers as they have tons of tutorials and reference material in their library. I'm pretty novice so I've applied to one of the schools and am practiicing every day. It's not easy but it's very rewarding.

Thank you! Yes, that is waxed thread. It's about the same thickness as embroidery thread, and waxed with beeswax. Usually in this day and age there are a lot of paperback books being made to save money, and those are what we call a 'perfect binding' (which is ridiculous and ironic because it's probably the LEAST perfect binding out there) So the pages are lined up and glued to the spine, which isn't much work and doesn't last very long. But in conventional hardcover books, yeah. You have to sew the pages together, and then make a cover, and then glue the endpapers to the inside covers. Not hard in theory but staying neat is hard and I'm constantly having to start over on a project. And maybe I will! Sounds like a good idea. :) and enough about me, what do YOU like to do?

You're welcome~! Ooo cool cool~ What does the beeswax help with? C:

-nod nod- hahah then why did they use that term? XD Because it keeps the pages even?

I never knew that! 8D That makes hardcovers a lot more awesome now. idky, but hearing about the craftsmanship that goes into it really makes them a lot cooler than just their covers. * w*

I can imagine it would be hard. @m@;

Awesome! I look forward to it~ > W<!

I like drawing, and it's probably the most consistent interest I indulge in. I stick to digital because I'm too lazy to bring out the stuff to draw traditionally.

I really enjoy listening to music, also. * w* Related to that, I like to sing, though I usually end up doing that at night because that's totally the most appropriate time to belt out when you aren't the only one in the house, yep. X'Da

I'm also a sucker for paranormal/supernatural stuff. [like right now, I'm watching this show, Ghost Adventures, even though I'm like "pfft oh yeah right /eyeroll" about it, there's just something about it that reels me in XD]

The beeswax helps keep the thread from tangling while you're sewing. If your thread starts to knot, it becomes very difficult to sew through the hole without risking a tear in your signatures (the folded pages that you sew through) And I have no idea why they coined that term, but it's been a source of irony for bookbinders for many years.

As for you interests, very cool! Do you have anything you particularly like to draw? Like, when I draw, it's always skyscapes or stars. Do you have a particular preference for what you like to make? Also what genre do you sing? D'you play any instruments? And haha, I never got into the paranormal stuff, but it sounds fun. Is Ghost Adventures like one of those documentary shows?

Oooooh smart! Awesome. C:

XD! I can imagine it would. lolol

Thanks! Mostly Original Characters [like my avatar, for example], sometimes monsters, eyes.. I really love drawing eyes, and occasionally landscape/scenery stuff. > w<! [here's my DA stuff ~ http://karret.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=/ it's not all strictly stuff I drew, though, I took some screenies of avatars I made on this other site and there are photos I took on my phone ahah]

Oooooh~~ you draw, too? Do you have any that are uploaded? 8'D

I don't have a particular genre I prefer to take songs from, I just sing whatever has a nice tune that I don't mess up. XD [ https://soundcloud.com/karret/good-mornin'>[here]'s an old voice clip. dfkugasdkfgdg I'm like.. way more shy about sharing my singing than I am about sharing my drawings for some reason. sdkfulgalsd I love singing, but when I hear recordings of it, I tend to just cringe and want to hide lololol] Oh, man I wish I played any instruments, but no, in the music world, I'm a one-trick pony. ; w; Do you?

I used to get spooked about it easily [and still sometimes do], but I don't know, I've just always been drawn to it at the same time. XD Sort of; it's like Ghost Hunters, where they go an investigate locations for paranormal activity using their gadgets and gizmos and flip their shit over nothing ehehehehehe.

Welcome [back]!

Cryptography is awesome; I never got really into all of the different kinds of encryption and the theories, but it was certainly why I almost wanted to major in math before I figured out that physics was my thing. Crypto-story time!

Back in middle school, I was really into an online space sim game that let users write scripts with certain limited client-side capabilities (the language was lua). I was in a major pirate guild; our usual activity consisted of staking out common trade routes in unmonitored space and being highwaymen that chased down and threatened passing players ("Your money or your life!" etc. etc., loads of fun). However, the community of this game ("Vendetta Online" if you're curious) was small -- really small. So small that pirates would log in if they saw that a major trader was online, and major traders would log out or only trade in nation-protected space if they saw that a major pirate was online.

The result of this was that it was sometimes very difficult to get all of the online pirates from different guilds grouped up, because the only way to know if a pirate was online was if they were either in your guild or if they made a comment on the server-wide public chat (which wasn't a smart thing to do, of course, because it gives away to traders that you're out and about). Guilds had a chat function which allowed them to communicate inside of the guild, but there was no practical way of communicating to members of different guilds or unaligned pirates. What most law-abiding professions (e.g. miners, traders, trade escorts, PvE people, etc.) did for this problem is have a widely-known "chat channel" that was more or less public, but players had to tune into it manually. This took the form of a number (for instance, pirate hunters normally communicated on channel 4357 if I remember correctly). The problem with this is evident for pirates: once people find out what number your channel is on, they can read all of the chatter freely.

Me and my small bored pirate guild did the most not-overkill thing we could think of, of course: we decided to use the lua plug-in feature of the game to emulate the Enigma machine used by the German U-boats in WWII. We all collaborated and wrote two separate plug-ins: a "client" plug-in which did the encryption and decryption of messages and automatically received/interpreted updated encryption keys, and a "server" plug-in which we installed on a dummy account. The server generated a new encryption key and a new channel number on the hour and tried to distribute it in the form of a private message to everyone on a list which the owner of the dummy account kept updated with names of approved pirates. We then distributed the client-side plug-in to other pirates outside of our guild and solved the communication problem in the most over-the-top fun way we could think of.

(Of course this was complete overkill for the problem at hand, we just wanted an excuse to use Enigma to organize ambushes on trade convoys -- because really what other encryption are you allowed to use for that)

My job was to read about how the Abwehr's variant of the mechanical Enigma device worked and translate it to logic understandable by a computer program. It was one of my first exposures to both programming and cryptography, and I remember getting really into it and frequently getting distracted by other cryptography-related history articles on Wikipedia at the time. Middle school me was on a pretty big cryptography kick well into high school after all of that. Fun stuff!

Mr. Quickhands

Yeah! It did work! Helped that our guild had two or three bored comp sci grad students on the roster to debug the chunks of code I wrote, and they wrote the vast majority of the framework for the plug-ins (the game supported Linux natively, so it normally attracted that type of player). We started with a really simple replacement encryption as a proof of concept and then updated it to Enigma later (didn't get to use the final version a whole lot, though).

We used it for about a month or two before coming to terms with the idea that it's infinitely more practical to have a TeamSpeak server. It was definitely a fun project, though. Nah, no anti-pirate guilds tried to make an Ultra emulator (I don't think they even knew or cared about our encrypted channel). That would have been cool, but also probably not worth the effort for them at all. Sadly, it's significantly easier to just make an alt pirate character and straight-up spy.

Howdy Hannah, I'm Mike, another total newbie in these parts. Shortly before I read this thread a friend of mine posted this little meme on Facebook. I'm betting it's a notion a lot of us could get behind:
