An Asexual Song?

Perhaps not asexual, but I think this song gives one up on not being driven mad by the need to have sex or be with someone, so perhaps asexuals could relate. I can. I like it. ^__^ But maybe that's just me.

Natasha Bedingfield

Single

Ah yeah that's right

All you single people out there

This is for you

I'm not waitin' around for a man to save me

(Cos I'm happy where I am)

Don't depend on a guy to validate me

(No no)

I don't need to be anyone's baby

(Is that so hard to understand?)

No I don't need another half to make me whole

Make your move if you want doesn't mean I will or won't

I'm free to make my mind up you either got it or you don't

[Chorus:]

This is my current single status

My declaration of independence

There's no way I'm tradin' places

Right now a star's in the ascendant

I'm single

(Right now)

That's how I wanna be

I'm single

(Right now)

That's how I wanna be

Ah yeah Uh Huh that's right

Don't need to be on somebody's arm to look good

(I like who I am)

I'm not saying I don't wanna fall in love 'cos I would

I'm not gonna get hooked up just 'cos you say I should

(Can't romance on demand)

I'm gonna wait so I'm sorry if you misunderstood

[Chorus]

Everything in it's right time everything in it's right place

I know I'll settle down one day

But 'til then I like it this way it's my way

Eh I like it this way

Make your move if you want doesn't mean I will or won't

I'm free to make my mind up you either got it or you don't

'Til then I'm single

This is my current single status

My declaration of independence

There's no way I'm tradin' places

Right now a star's in the ascendant

The song I've always identified with (as a romantic asexual) is 'To The Moon And Back' by Savage Garden. Look at the lyrics:

She's taking her time making up the reasons

To justify all the hurt inside

Guess she knows from the smiles and the look in their eyes

Everyone's got a theory about the bitter one

They're saying, "Mama never loved her much"

And, "Daddy never keeps in touch

That's why she shies away from human affection"

But somewhere in a private place

She packs her bags for outer space

And now she's waiting for the right kind of pilot to come

And she'll say to him

She's sayin

Chorus

I would fly up to the moon and back if you'll be...

If you'll be my baby

I've Got a ticket for a world where we belong

So would you be my baby?

She can't remember a time when she felt needed

If love was red then she was color blind

All her friends, well they've been trialed for treason

And crimes that were never defined

She's saying, "Love is like a barren place,

And reaching out for human faith

It's like a journey I just don't have a map for"

So baby's gonna take a dive and

Push the shift to overdrive

Send a signal that she's hanging

All her hopes on the stars

What a pleasant dream

She's sayin

Chorus

Mama never loved her much

And, Daddy never keeps in touch

That's why she shies away from human affection

But somewhere in a private place

She packs her bags for outer space

And now she's waiting for the right kind of pilot to come

And she'll say to him

She's sayin

Chorusx2

...it reminds me of myself, making up all sorts of stories as to why I can't seem to stick at a relationship, and waiting for a guy who understands where i'm coming from on the whole no sex thing, whilst my friends and family come up with their own theories (lesbian being the popular favourite).

Morrissey has gotta be the ultimate asexual icon' date=' but i think Antony and the Johnsons have quite an asexual vibe going on. I would say that Sigur Ros is some of the most asexual music ever, like the YMCA is to homosexuals. It's completely non-sex related, quixotic and the vocals are sung in a made up language. You know it makes sense :D[/quote']

Oh, you totally win. Sigur Rós is pretty asexual. (Though I think the singer's gay IRL) And besides, made up languages rule.

And I've always loooved 'Single' by Natasha Bedingfield, but it's not very asexual, imo. ("I know I'll settle down one day/Till then I like it this way")

..Not saying we don't get married, it just never struck me as an asexual song. Maybe because I'm old fashioned and associate marriage with 2.5 children.

I've been listening to "Single By Choice" by The Bangles' date=' I don't even know what the lyrics are, but it seems fitting to me. But then again, I did mention that I don't know what the lyrics are.[/quote']

Damn it, I wish it was on my Bangles CD.

Evanescence

"Call Me When You're Sober"

Don't cry to me.

If you loved me,

You would be here with me.

You want me,

Come find me.

Make up your mind.

Should I let you fall?

Lose it all?

So maybe you can remember yourself.

Can't keep believing,

We're only deceiving ourselves .

And I'm sick of the lie,

And you're too late.

Don't cry to me.

If you loved me,

You would be here with me.

You want me,

Come find me.

Make up your mind.

Couldn't take the blame.

Sick with shame.

Must be exhausting to lose your own game.

Selfishly hated,

No wonder you're jaded.

You can't play the victim this time,

And you're too late.

Don't cry to me.

If you loved me,

You would be here with me.

You want me,

Come find me.

Make up your mind.

You never call me when you're sober.

You only want it cause it's over,

It's over.

How could I have burned paradise?

How could I - you were never mine.

So don't cry to me.

If you loved me,

You would be here with me.

Don't lie to me,

Just get your things.

I've made up your mind.

As an asexual I view sober as meaning "free from the judgement impairing effects of sexual arousal". A lot of the rest sounds like an asexual being in a controlling relationship with a sexual.

A lot of the songs on Evanesence's upcoming album sound asexual

"Snow White Queen"

Stoplight, lock the door.

Don't look back.

Undress in the dark,

And hide from you,

All of you.

You'll never know the way your words have haunted me.

I can't believe you'd ask these things of me.

You don't know me.

You belong to me,

My snow white queen.

There's nowhere to run, so let's just get it over.

Soon I know you'll see,

You're just like me.

Don't scream anymore my love, 'cause all I want is you.

Wake up in a dream.

Frozen fear.

All your hands on me.

I can't scream

I can't escape the twisted way you think of me.

I feel you in my dreams and I don't sleep.

You belong to me,

My snow white queen.

There's nowhere to run, so let's just get it over.

Soon I know you'll see,

You're just like me.

Don't scream anymore my love, 'cause all I want is you

I can't save your life,

Though nothing I bleed for is more tormenting.

I'm losing my mind and you just stand there and stare as my world divides.

You belong to me,

My snow white queen.

There's nowhere to run, so let's just get it over.

Soon I know you'll see,

You're just like me.

Don't scream anymore my love, 'cause all I want is you.

Seriously all of them.

"Lacrymosa"

Out on your own,

Cold and alone again.

Can this be what you really wanted, baby?

Blame it on me,

Set your guilt free.

Nothing can hold you back now.

Now that you're gone,

I feel like myself again.

Grieving the things I can't repair and willing...

To let you blame it on me,

And set your guilt free.

I don't want to hold you back now love.

I can't change who I am.

Not this time, I won't lie to keep you near me.

And in this short life, there's no time to waste on giving up.

My love wasn't enough.

And you can blame it on me,

Just set your guilt free, honey.

I don't want to hold you back now love.

I always fancy that Garbage's "Queer" is about (trying to convert) an asexual.

Heck, I might let Shirley try.

Ash's "Candy" strikes some asexual chord with me as well, though I'm not sure who's the asexual one. The narrator?

Goo Goo Dolls' "Long Way Down" feels like a back-and-forth between a sexual/asexual couple.

Kara's Flowers' "Myself" is easy to read as asexual too.

Underwater Circus' "Not You" is close enough I hold onto it, though it's about not wanting casual sex, not asexuality.

The Beatles' "Two of Us" is my favorite aromantic love song.

Elvis Costello's "Mystery Dance" is. . .well. Hardly meant to be asexual, but amusing from an asexual perspective.

(You guys can look up the lyrics, I don't want to clutter up the whole page.)

I have always been intrigued with Sinead O'Connor, to me who is a good example of androgyny. I have been curious about her, about her relationships, because of things she has said in the past, and even some of her songs. (Not Prince's song, which she covered)

But, after doing some reading up, I found out, much to my chagrin, that she's not asexual. I kinda suspected, but, anyway, here is a song, which is a good one for us:

No Man's Woman

I don't wanna be no man's woman

It don't make me happy this mantrolling

thing that you got for me so I become

no man's woman

I don't wanna be no man's woman

I've other work I want to get done

I haven't travelled this far to become

no man's woman

no man's woman

Cuz I'm tired of it

and I'm so scared of it

that I'll never trust again

cuz a man can fake you

take your soul and make you

miserable in so much pain

My friends think I'm alone but I've got secrets

I don't tell everything about the love I get

I got a lovin' man but he's a spirit

He never does me harm never treats me bad

He'd never takes away all the love he has

and I'm forgiven oh a million times

I'm never tired of it

and I'm not scared of it

cuz it doesn't cause me pain

Like a man can fake you

take your soul and make you

never be yourself again

I never wanna be no man's woman

I only wanna be my own woman

I haven't travelled this far to become

no man's woman (x3)

Morrissey has gotta be the ultimate asexual icon

I totally don't know who Morrissey is but I'm pretty sure he was a major feature on Marilyn Manson's List of Ways to Tell if you are Gay.

Here it is.

24. If you've ever had a haircut like Morrissey.

25. If you've ever had a haircut while a Morrissey or Smiths album was playing in the room.

...

39. If your first, last, middle or only name is Morrissey.

Which interests me a little because it seems to link into that whole 'if you're not straight you're gay' kinda thing. Again, know very little about Morrissey except that he appears to be connected to The Smiths, but - arrgh the philosophical aspects of this are escaping me. Hopefully someone understands what I mean, about asexuality being taken for gayness.

(I'm also thinking about that thing where Meathead was going on about this guy calling 'The Hand That Feeds' gay, but Meathead's site seems to have disappeared so I can't link to that now. Damn.)

- Alan

He sang for the Smiths. He never really seemed male or female, but also said he wasn't the 3rd sex (androgyn), but the 4th sex (which leaves only asex....if we think in terms of gender, that'd mean he doesnt feel like a boy or girl--the first two--or like both--androgyn--but rather like none of the above...asex). He's not gay or straight either. He's just...nothing. That's why he is said to fit asexuality so well. He, like us, doesn't really have a thing for boys or girls, and, on top of that, has asex for his gender.

Ugh another person confusing sex and gender. They are not the same thing. In general when one talks about the four sexualities it is refered to some times as the four sexes.

When person is talking about sexuality...they 3rd sexuality is bisexual, the fourth is asexual. He outright said he was asexual several times. Nobody believed him (big surprise). Even after he said he was not celibate anymore the man said he would like to keep it private. The thing is the interest in his sexuality kinda waned over the years. He is a mysterious fellow. In the end it is the vegetarian, vegan and latino communities that attached themselves to Morrissey.

The third GENDER is androgyne. The third Sexuality is Bisexual. So please in the future do not get the two things confused.

Sex, Sexuality and Gender are not the same thing. I suggest you do a little more research on the subject before commenting on the subject. There are quite a few (not a majority, but a sizable minority) who identify as androgynes here on AVEN.

In fact there is an extensive website out there analyzing Morrissey on both the sexuality and gender issues. It explains between gender and sexuality and does it quite nicely.
