Apparently the author has stated that Grell is indeed a she, but apparently the fandom never got the memo and continues to think of Grell as a very feminine gay guy. So what do you guys think??? If I recall Grell was portrayed as female in the Japanese Dub but male in the english dub (translation error and/or misinterpretation). However as it is not explicitly stated I believe it can be taken in any way the fandom sees fit. There is also no reason to categorize Grell into a binary too. I just like their maniacal I-want-to-murder-you-while-you're-in-bed-with-me attitude! Black Butler was amazing so I wouldn't go too in depth about Grell. Link to post Share on other sites

Although its hard to say whether they are trans female or not because remember in Japanese and in English they did have a male voice. In Kochikame(Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouen Mae Hashutsujo) there is a trans female character named Maria(Asato Ai) and while in the manga she is full female in the anime she is a crossdressing man who presents female and has a female voice.
