R.Million
I have a mental problem, or a condition, or something. It might be connected to my asexuality, I am not sure. I've been searching for years, everywhere I could think of to find information, or even just a name for it. Its not something I want to openly discuss but I think I'm getting to the point where I need help. If you know any world class, saw it all, type professionals in this field please help. (I apologize if I'm out of line or in the wrong area :( )
dabishop
Without knowing which part of the world you're in, I can only speak of people/programs local to me. Turns out I got supremely lucky, because the University of Minnesota's Center for Sexual Health is world-class in terms of their competence and commitment to what they do. I spoke (briefly) to the dean and several of their lead clinicians besides my own therapist, and I can honestly say there's nothing they haven't seen or any strategy they aren't willing to consider in coming up with a treatment modality that works for you in all your uniqueness. I wish you the best of luck !

Do you know if any of them would be willing to hear me out and offer a little advice without pay and through an anonymous email? At least at first.
dabishop
It certainly wouldn't hurt to contact them and see what they can do by remote - the battery of tests I took could be done pretty much anywhere, but I couldn't say if their protocol allows them to run it without a face-to-face visit. As an accredited psych clinic, they take Medicare/Medicaid and such, but you'd have to ask them how far they'd be willing to go 'pro-bono'. It looks like Dr. Gonzales isn't there anymore, but she'd be an excellent person to talk to; I'll PM you the contact if I can find it again.
averylongwalk
needle in a hay stack. totally random. good luck
SithLord
I agree with the needle and hay thing. Good ones are hard to find. The one I went to was for anger issues but she was also a relationship therapist and when I mentioned my asexuality she said I was wrong or a late bloomer. Good luck. dabishop
Yep. Like they say on the Powerball - can't win if you don't play.
R.Million
I can't really play the powerball with this. Its pretty dark. My worst fear is coming out with it amd getting locked in bad brain jail with the note, "Hell if I know. Give her some fingerprints and figure it out later."
dabishop
I understand - the system doesn't give us much beyond vague "talking cures" and chemical sledgehammers. The good news is, as long as there's no obvious sign in your words or actions that you're going to be an immediate, serious threat to yourself or someone else, they can't make you do anything. R.Million
Well, I'm not sure I could tell most lower experienced therapists or shrinks about the issue and also convince them of that. That why I am trying to secretly get in touch with a really good psychologist.
averylongwalk
honestly, unless you are a threat to you or anyone else they can't say anything. the joys about talking to a therapist is that they can't tell anyone anything unless you say so...or the courts i guess. but that RARELY happens
ThinkingPositive1982
Sorry to hear you're having trouble finding a good psychologist/therapist! I had a pretty good one for a while but when I moved (from one part of Ohio to another), I ended up with a really horrible one. It really is like the lottery. My best suggestion is asking any local LGBT groups if they have suggestions, in the hopes that if a therapist works with other sexual orientations than hetero, they might be able to help asexual too. We should have a dedicated resource post on here where people can add good therapists they know about from different locations!
Kulukan
Put an ad out in the newspaper and force the candidates to fight each other to the death (promise them a cake). The winner is your new therapist. The only experience I've ever had with a professional in that field was when I had to have an evaluation for military enlistment. Psychological examinations are scary. Still, trial and error!
R.Million
The things is, I didn't say I want a therapist. I don't. I don't need someone to sit around and listen until I feel better once a week. Therapists don't even need any kind of certification. I don't need a shrink either, thats a therapist with a lisecne to drug me up. To be clear I'm trying to find a scientist who studies the human mind.
averylongwalk
well anyone in the mental health field is more than qualified. 4 years of college. definitely a qualification to practice. honestly, if you want to be healthy, you will make it happen. if not, then....
