But what IS a secret?

This is a question that I constantly feel accosted by. Certainly you've encountered situations where someone trusts you with information that they don't want you to spread. The problem is that in these cases, they've started this process. I'm usually under the impression that if someone shares something with you that they want other people to know, they just don't really know how to tell them. I'm not saying it's your duty to violently regurgitate this information to everyone, just that as it might help you understand that person better it might help someone else do the same, if applicable. I'm just kinda venting, but tell me what you think.

Also, I think it's important to state that I'm speaking purely about informal information, not contractual confidentiality.

yes a secret is when someone tells you something, but asks you not to tell anyone else, they'll usually say "it's a secret so please don't tell anyone."

If they don't ask you specifically to keep the info secret then it's probably just gossip (ie spread around in a hush hush manner i.e. "omg don't say I told you but apparently Mary is pregnant to Tom even though she is married to George *gasp*)

or it's just something that they don't mind other people knowing about so they don't ask you to keep it to yourself.

That's how it's always been for me anyway :o

Well, when people are talking to you and starting to get to know you and finally sharing personal infromation with you, then there is an implicit "this is something which isn't secret, yet you shouldn't be going out of your way to be sharing it."

Yes, I understand the concept of a secret. I guess that a "secret" ultimately refers to the state of the information; a state that is naturally unstable. We are all responsible for the diffusion of information, exactly how long it takes for information to stop being secretive is dependent on the tact of individuals, I suppose.
