The first time I learned about asexuality was from a poster at my school. I didn't consider myself asexual, until I got a boyfriend and I hated it. So then I looked it up and came across AVEN.

I think the first I heard of asexuality was when I was talking about sexuality with a college classmate (I think it was Pride Week?) and she mentioned that she had an asexual friend. I hadn't heard of the term before but I understood what it meant, though I didn't understand how you could not be into people of any gender (at that time I didn't know that aromanticism was a thing, and I didn't know the difference between sexual and romantic orientation and I figured I was straight). Sometime within the next year, I had a bit of a crisis and googled "not interested in sex" and found out lots more about asexuality and AVEN...and realized that I myself was ace!

I came across the term on Tumblr and at first I was just, 'oh that sounds like me!' but it was only a year later that I decided to call myself one. I stumbled upon AVEN when I was looking for more ace-only 'get to know people' site, again, on Tumblr

I was following a webcomic writer who was ace a few years ago and she mentioned the term. I googled it and came here :P

I learned about asexuality in 2006-2007ish. I found AVEN in 2010 when I googled "asexuality" and it was mentioned in the Wikipedia article.

I had heard the term asexual awhile ago, but I did not originally know much about it. I might have found AVEN through Google originally, but I marked that I do not remember because I'm not sure :/

So I was watching over my sister, checking stuff on my phone, when I thought about this:"hmm, I might be asexual so Ill check something real quick."

I was asking a certain question I don't want to say here, but I found this site, and read a bit, and I was like:"Yes, I'm asexual."

I don't remember how I found out about asexuality, but I found AVEN when I was trying to learn about asexuality.

It was only a few months ago when I really learned about Asexuality, but the funny thing is I can't for the life of me remember how I stumbled upon it! I think I was you-tubing about gender fluidity. And I know I googled about being 24 and never having dated or had sex and came across a good amount of related articles, but I don't know how I came about Asexuality or aven. I wish I could remember! As it turned out to be a pretty important coincidence!

(I just wanted to say thank you for all of the replies! This thread was dead for a long time! It's interesting to learn about how people discovered asexuality/AVEN.) :cake:

It was Christmas, and I was but twelve years of age. We were celebrating at my aunt-and-uncle's house, and my mom and aunt were sitting in the living room talking about this and that. Eventually their conversation led to me and how I was about the same age as my elder cousin when she started developing crushes and whatnot. I was sitting, being antisocial and easedropping on their conversation. My mom said something along the lines of me being at that age where I "would" start to develope "those" feelings. My aunt gave my mom an interesting response. She told my mom about how a fellow nurse at the hospital she worked at was asexual and you never know, maybe I could be too. As my mom went on to say she hoped not because that sounded so "sad" and "lonely", I pondered the interesting new word my vocabulary had acquired. "Asexual" instantly fit in my mind. It just made sense. Sexuality. Romance. These were just things I never really thought of unless brought up by an external source. The media, a kid in class who was eager to share all the adult knowledge they had acquired, or some of my peers who thought dating someone for a week and sharing saliva-coated lollipops on the bus was "mature" and "cool". As well, when I did think of such things it was never in regards to myself. So with this revelation, a waiting game began. I didn't want to jump the gun, so I decided if by the time I started high school my feelings remained as they were then I would officialy consider myself asexual. And so I waited. When high school eventually came around, my thoughts at that time were basically, "Well that's that, I guess."

I came across AVEN while going on a very frustrating google trip.

I'd been aware that I was a wee bit different from everyone else regarding sex for a long time now. I've tried talking to other people about that but they just never really understood what I was getting at and those conversations quickly spiraled into "don't worry it will happen", "when you meet the right guy", and "were you sexually abused????". So, feeling absolutely annoyed and maybe a tiny, tiny bit lonely, I decided to do something stupid....and that was Google. I don't remember exactly how I ended up on AVEN but I'm really glad I did. :)
