if we revived the thread, what would we talk about here?

Anything we like! As a starter, how was your weekend - do anything nice?

I love Star Trek too by the way! Elim Garak in particular is an excellent character.

oh, that's cool! another trekkie.

i liked Garak to the point of getting a new hyperfixation along with Data and Lore.

we have something in common cuz we're both exiled (him from Cardassia, me from my family) and we both tell stories which are all true, especially the lies. (lol that's an accurate way to describe my stories though).

who is your fave trek character and why?

in case if i overshare.. i didn't mean to.

I love DS9 and I think the 90s Star Trek (DS9 and Voyager) have been my favourite so far! I've been watching all the series in release order - I'm up to Picard at the minute and have Discovery series 5, Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds and Prodigy left to go.

Garak is such a complicated guy, his plotlines were so great. I'm sorry to hear about the situation with your family though

I'm honestly not sure I could pick a favourite character from all of them! If I pick from each series I've watched so far it's as follows though:

TOS/TAS : Spock

TNG: Data

DS9: Odo/Jadzia/Quark (honestly DS9 was fabulous and lots of the characters were great, making it hard to choose!)

Voyager: Sorry, I love them all for different reasons and cannot choose even two or three

Enterprise: Archer

Discovery (s1-4): Probably Saru overall, with Sylvia Tilly a close second

TNG: Data

yay we share a fave character from TNG ^^

i should add my faves..

TOS: Sulu. i haven't watched TOS cuz my first date was with TNG, but i've seen some exerpts on youtube.

TNG: Data and Lore.

DS9: Garak. And Odo cuz he's a changeling and i dreamed of being a changeling in childhood.

Voyager: Kes.

*to be continued...*

i'm on season 3 of Voyager rn and it's interesting. though imo, DS9 is the best.

On Star Trek—I have watched most of TOS, and a few parts of Lower Decks. I’ve seen a lot of people say online they love DS9, and I should get into it at some point. I enjoyed the few clips I’ve seen of it.

My favorite character of TOS is probably Uhura. I think she’s the unsung hero of the bridge. Second is probably Spock.

Lower Decks is just ok; I don’t like its humor very much. But I do like T’Lyn.

Kes is a great character, though some found her boring apparently. Voyager has some real quality stuff later on for you to look forward to (as well as at the start of course).

You should definitely try DS9. I think it's good all the way through but it really finds its feet a few series in, with some amazing plotlines. It's also hands-down the darkest Trek series (though I believe Discovery comes close sometimes).

Uhura is good, but doesn't get as much screen time as she perhaps deserved. It was the 60s to be fair and even having a black women in a position of power was fairly ground-breaking then (sadly)!

I've watched some Lower Decks during the pandemic and I did like it but didn't get all the references. I will now!

You're right! I think it's also because my work friends are all younger than me, and so are most of the people in my martial arts club (another of my major social circles). It's skewing my perspective a little.

I definitely think we should try and revive this thread a little bit. I've just changed my notification for this thread from weekly to daily - that should help!

Lol I’m actually on the younger end of my class (med school, we have a wide variety of age ranges but most people are at least a year older than me) so my perspective remains that we’re all babies.

also: you do martial arts! That’s so cool! I’ve done a lot of kickboxing before, and a variant of MMA, but never anything too serious -not for lack of trying, my mom just wouldn’t let me sign up lol and I don’t have enough me money to pay for classes myself.

This is now a week old so I’m reviving the question: how were y’all’s weekends? I mostly took a sabbatical from studying, will be back in full swing tomorrow tho.

Also I know literally nothing about Star Trek so nothing for me to contribute there lol.

Mostly working on my thesis and oversleeping. 😅 I'm graduating soon and need to complete this thing to graduate as an undergraduate honors student. My thesis is about bicycle infrastructure and accessibility in Boston. By being here right now I'm procastinating.

This whole thing is so relatable lol. I have an exam on Wednesday, bus since it’s something I’ve had exams on before, and I’ve done well on those, I feel like I can just… know it all again through osmosis JAJAJA

Your thesis topic sounds really interesting! What’s your major?

Thanks!

A lot of people say they know nothing about geography or are not "good" at it, which I think is unfortunate because people are limiting themselves and not allowing themselves to learn. Either that or people mix up geology and geography and start talking to me about rocks. I'm not a 4th grader memorizing things lol. I'm not memorizing the capital to South Dakota haha. We have Google for that.

I do a lot of stuff involving sustainability (including climate change + clean energy research), transportation and planning, using GIS and remote sensing (drones and satellites) to create maps and analyze data, and so on. It's the "why of where" as my professor calls it.
