Popular Post ithaca
Hehe, big words eh? One at a time! "Anti-sexuality" is the attitude of people who are opposed to sexuality, and "anti-sexual" is the adjective that describes people who have this attitude. There are anti-sexual people who are asexual, but it would be wrong to consider anti-sexuality a trait of asexuals, and it is not an attitude shared by all nor probably most asexuals. It can be seen in threads or posts that have phrases like "sex is something for animals," "those who don't have sex are better than those who do", ecc. Generally speaking, engaging in sexual activities is not impure and not wrong, as long as all people involved are of legal age and consenting. Sometimes people post things like “asexuals are better than sexuals”, “aces are the next stage of evolution”*, and some asexuals believe they have more mental capacity, better attention spans, etc because they're not distracted by sexual urges. This can be easily seen as disparaging towards sexual people. Keep in mind that most nobel prizes were not asexual! Sharing anti-sexual positions on the site does not help the growth of AVEN as a community, which has visibility and education of asexuality as its main goals. This means spreading awareness of asexuality to more people, asexual and not asexual, who will likely read our forums. Speaking of sexual people as if they were "inferior" or guided by animal instincts which they have no control over (which, for the record, is completely untrue), certainly does not help to give a clear idea of what asexuality is and does not give AVEN a welcoming image, especially to all those sexual partners, friends and allies who are part of or visit our forums. Asexuality is not superior to any other sexual orientation, it is not the orientation of people who are "purer" and it does not make anyone better or smarter than anyone else, nor it is the next stage of human evolution. "Elitism" is definitely a word that reminds us the word "elite", and it means "elitist attitude, which defends the interests of the elite." Why this thread? Every so often, we read threads where there are words like "TRUE asexual" or "PURE asexual", and usually these messages recite phrases like, "Oh then you're not a true asexual because * gasp * you do X, Y and Z as well!!!". Basically, people who express an elitist attitude confuse orientation with behavior. Asexual people do not feel sexual attraction. Period. Not having sex or not having a libido doesn't make anyone more asexual than anyone else. There are no purer or better asexual than others. Many asexuals have sex for different reasons: some are in a relationship with non-asexuals, there are those who are curious and want to try it, some appreciate the physical pleasure they derive from it, although they don't feel the 'initial attraction'. Engaging in partnered sexual activities does not make a person less asexual. Asexuality is defined by the lack of sexual attraction, NOT by behavior.** Openly elitist attitudes on this site do not help the growth of AVEN as a community, which, in order to grow, needs to give space to new users who are facing the process of self-discovery. Nobody likes to feel judged, and it doesn't give a good impression to register on a site where there seems to be first and second class asexuals. It is important to understand that while everyone has the right to hold their opinions, posting antisexual and/or elitist comments is strongly discouraged and, to some extent, not allowed on AVEN. Threads and messages that carry these attitudes do NOT represent the position of AVEN, and may be locked and/or reviewed by the Admod Team. This doesn't mean that people who post this kind of messages are not being honest about their opinions, or perhaps that they have not good intentions, but they simply may have some misconceptions on asexuality and/or sexuality. *Another very common misuse of evolution in asexual discourse is the often-heard idea that asexuality is evolution's way of controlling overpopulation. **To read more on asexual elitism, please check "What is asexual elitism and why AVEN discourages it" and "Asexual Elitism".
